Capture Method

Blue Cloud Video uses the Frame by Frame capture method.

A Frame by Frame capture is a telecine transfer in which the image is taken from the emulsion side of the film using a 3CCD digital camera and enlarged enough so that you can see the grain of the film.  THERE IS NO FLICKER because we use the latest telecine projectors and capture every frame of film. The film is then timed to 18 frames per second - the same rate as it is played back. We can also time your film at any frame per second you would like (Use this if you recorded your film at a different frame rate than 18 fps).

We use the Workprinter from Moviestuff - Compared to the rank transfer, PC magazine gave it EXCELLENT results. Read the article here: PC magazine article on Workprinter

We then use a non-linear editing suite to provide absolute control over the creativity of the titles and DVD authoring.  No automatic programs are used. We will set precise chapter marks at the beginning of each reel.

The audio will be  Dolby 5.1 surround if you have chosen to use a music background.

Below is an example of a 1CCD capture vs. 3CCD capture:

Color Correction

Blue Cloud Video has the ability to color correct your film. Please review a real customer's example below.
their film had a very light and green cast to it. We corrected the color and the result speaks for itself.

 Edit your own film

We can send you raw AVI files of your footage so you can edit the video uncompressed. We can deliver via MIniDV tape or DVD ROM or hard drive.

You will be able to see each frame as well in the AVI files.

Archive

Note that a DVD copy is not a true ARCHIVE of your film because the footage is compressed to MPEG 2.  It is however, a great way to view your film on the television. DVD's do not last as long as they were projected to last. There are issues with corrosion that we cannot control.  There is a new GOLD disc out by Memorex that is slated to last longer.  See their website for information.

VHS will degrade every time you view it . DVD is currently the best technology to archive your memories.

A DVD can hold up to 1 hour uncompressed. We will not compress more than 1 hour of footage onto a DVD since the MPEG 2 format is already compressed to preserve your film.
Blue Cloud Video will archive your film on our server for up to 30 days in case you would like a re-sequence, Archive copy on DV tape, AVI files, or extra copies of your footage. Your footage is then deleted without notice. If you would like extra copies after that time, the original DVD's must be sent back so we can re-edit the footage, or, we will have to re-scan the film.

Archive with Mini DV tapes

We provide one DVD copy, but if you prefer, we can provide a MINI-DV copy ALSO if you provide the tape.  This will put an AVI format master onto tape and should last longer than the DVD. You can then give this to any edit shop and they can transfer the footage to any new media that is invented in the future.

The DV tape will let you upgrade when new technology arrives in the next 25 years.  Note that one tape holds 60 minutes - please provide enough tapes for your footage (see chart below for approx times).

Archive with your film reels
DO NOT throw out your old film reels.  Original film/slides/negatives are the best way to archive media.
Store them in a cool dry place after your DVD's are created.

What does a DVD transfer mean?

Blue Cloud Video uses a 3CCD digital camcorder to capture your film directly to the computer FRAME-BY-FRAME. It is then edited with a non-linear editing program where the color and brightness can be corrected manually if needed. We can also grab screen shots of the film. We then create a DVD with chapters, inkjet print a cover picture onto your DVD and professionally pack and ship everything back to you.

Most transfer companies use automatic programs to add DVD chapters and they charge extra.  Or, they may transfer your footage straight to DVD with no chapters or titles using a set-top DVD burner.

Some companies have not upgraded their equipment and still use use VHS camcorders to record your 8mm film video onto DVD (see above)- projecting it onto a wall or white piece of paper.  When VHS is used, the film is ruined forever because VHS will degrade your 8mm and Super 8mm film image when it is then converted to DVD (digital). If your old film was previously transferred to VHS, here is your chance to transfer it onto DVD correctly. (Send us your film, not your VHS tapes).

No Minimum Charge

Blue cloud video does NOT require a minimum charge.  You can convert one 3-inch reel (50 ft), or 25+ 3-inch reels.  You will be paying the same price per 50ft, plus return shipping.

We charge NO hidden fees. What you see is what you get.
